Please agree with me

Since we've been married, Joe and I have had an unresolved, on-going debate. It's one that really unsettles me to the core.

Resting places for the TV remotes.

Let me explain. Every time I straighten the house, I put our TV remotes in the same places. I've been doing this for three years. However, Joe says my remote resting places are not logical and so he's continually asking, "Where's the remote?" He's been doing this for three years.

Last night, we had our discussion yet again (during which I may or may not have declared that every living person would agree with me) and decided we need to move toward reconciliation by putting aside our differences and behaving in a mature fashion.

We decided to put it on my blog and get your input.

So I hate begging for comments and I promise you'll never see this again, but can you please let me know that you agree with me what you think? You can even vote anonymously.

AND if you know a man who could cast his vote too, that would be tremendous. Joe says this poll will be one-sided since primarily women read my blog, even though I say this is about logic and not gender. And I know all my readers are highly logical, smart people. Right? So here we go:

Question:
Where is this most logical place to keep a TV remote after straightening up the house?

Answer A:
On the couch or side table (living room) or on the nightstand (bedroom)

Answer B:
On top of the TV

I'll reveal the results and whose answer is whose on Friday. Now vote!

CLARIFICATION: In no way, shape or form is this debate causing actual harm in our marriage. We have no deal breakers. As Savage Garden circa 1997 would say, we're still truly, madly, deeply in love and always will be. The end.

Answer A

Are we going to weigh in on the corn debate too ;). Though I guess that would be all of us just guessing who has lost their mind.

I'm not sure I'm ready to go public about the Great Corn Debate '03. Feelings are still tender on that subject....

My first answer was B. Then I saw Jen's answer and questioned mine. But since B was my gut reaction, I'm sticking with B.

Answer B

Only because if the tv is in the living room, i dont think the remote should be in the bedroom. But next to the table is fine as well as ontop of the tv.

Kristen said...

Totally B.

It isn't even a question in our house. All three of us firmly hold to the on top of the TV resting place. There is no other place to keep them.

A - without question! Because, what if your TV is mounted to the wall or within a wall unit, and the top of it isn't exposed? (I can tell you that my husband would vote for "on the couch" and that is why he can never find it - mini hands and sticky fingers pick it up to play with and the couch is too good a vantage point for little eyes!) I keep ours in a basket on a shelf NEXT to the TV.

I would say both places are logical. We keep our remotes in the top drawer of our side table in the living room, because I like to able to see it just lying around. I guess if you don't have a drawer on top of the TV is less noticeable. Not really sure, I think this is a toss up, which really doesn't help out your situation at all. Good luck with this one :).

B: I'm just saying that because that's where I put mine.

P.S. Katie...if that's not your answer, I would like to change mine to A :)

It must be A, for wouldn't having the remote placed on top of the TV defeat the purpose of having a remote in the first place?

I vote A.

My husband votes B.

I put the remotes on the side table near the couch in the living room and in the drawer of the nightstand in the bedroom. After children, I began putting the remote on top of the TV, out of reach. I guess you could call me Switzerland. Also, if this is the worst fight you have with Joe, then you are going to be just fine.

Ok, I'm going to totally sound like a typical "peace maker" but here's my real answer...when I'm just done watching tv and want to remember where I put the remote, I would put on the side of the couch or side table. If I had cleaned and straightened everything up I would put it on the top of the tv...I think it depends on the circumstances :)

A/B? Does that work?

We put ours in a basket on top of our enclosed tv dresser. I just hate it when they are lying around, for people to see and lose, so having it in a basket makes complete sense to me. Kc and I agree totally on this one. We are both very organized people. :)

For the record: I have been trying to get one of the old cool remotes with the long cords. So it is always tethered to one spot and one can simply pull the cord to find the remote. But, for some reason they are "out of date." :)

Jon sums up my thoughts completely.

Also just a clarification that the side table in the BR--I assumed there is a TV in there. Otherwise if there was not, it would be just on the side table in the area of the TV location. Or wherever I just happened to carry it....

I'm going to go with answer A, because I really hate getting out of bed to locate the remote :-)

PS: I'm setting aside Thursdays as blog day...I miss my blog too!

I can't remember if it was A or B...this whole pregnancy thing is TOTALLY messing with my brain...BUT I know that I choose a side table or night stand. Someone else gave the same reason I will...it seems to defeat the purpose of a remote if you have to walk over to the television to pick it up. duh. :)

PS Katie I hope this was your answer...but now that I type that I'm seeming to recall someone in the Linden House continually put the remote on the television...I stand by my first answer though!

Just to clarify, we have two TVs, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It's not a question of carrying the remotes around. :)

A all the way. If the t.v. is at all high (like, say, in a nook above the fireplace) and your roomate puts the remote on top of the t.v. and, HEAVEN FORBID, the motion of the television caused by trying to reeeeach up to get said remote, results in the remote falling behind the television, what then? Then, you have to get out the step ladder to try and reach it ... I prefer the coffee table. I'm just saying.....for the sake of the shorties...

B B B B B

I always put it on top of the tv, because I don't like stuff cluttering up my tables. Plus, the baby/children get hold of it, chew on it, pick at the buttons, drop it, throw it, etc., and it gets ruined. So it goes on top of the tv, where no little people can reach it. Yet.

Zach said...

What's the point of having it out of reach when you come in and sit down to flip on the tv? We keep our's nice 'n handy in three distinct places: if we haven't cleaned up the remote is either on the couch in the open or probably lost in a crevasse in the blanket somewhere, if we have cleaned up it's in the top drawer of the end table, or if we are cooking it's on top of the counter by the flower vase. The top of the TV is the least logical place to have the remote. Case in point: Webster defines REMOTE as being "situated at some distance away."

Kirsten said...

A, for Zach's reason. If I wanted to turn the TV on after first walking to the TV, I probably wouldn't have a remote.

Additional question: Have you considered eliminating the bedroom TV? We have the same set-up, and I'm convinced that the bedroom TV decreases sleep, as well as nighttime reading. My English-major husband hasn't read in a novel in I don't know how long.

Courtney said...

Ok, I took my own little poll here at work and asked my fellow speech-pathologists...the winner is both A and B! It looks like this debate will conitnue on forever!

Aunt Jane said...

Wow. If only we could have this kind of clear cut choice in political arenas.

It depends on the age. Under age 22, the most logical places are: under couch cushions, in the crack of the recliner, AWOL for three days, in the basement...you get the picture.

We attempt to keep ours in a bowl (brought home from Dallas!) on the coffee table. In the bedroom, it stays next to the TV on a stand. (It will slide off the top if placed there.)

My thought is that this is not a gender thing. It's a human trait that continually amazes me; people can view a situation from such different perspectives.

Answer A

Defiantly!!!

Why would you put it on top of the TV??? logic would say that the remote was designed to remove the walking to the tv-ness, not add to the walking every time. That's like putting the Toilet Paper in the closet, you will have to go get it before you sit down or else you will be very sorry!! 8-) You put the remote in a different location, other then the top of the TV, like the couch or end table, but always the same place.

Neil said...

Option A...NEVER on top of the TV. I agree that defeats the purpose of the remote. Like wearing socks with sandals, the point of sandals is, in part, to prevent any additional effort from being expended (like putting on socks). If you've already taken the time to put socks on, you might as well man up and find your shoes. Similarly, if you've already walked to the TV to get the remote, the hard part is over and you can just stand there and change the channel.

Laura said...

Answer A - Nate and I both agree. Who wants to walk to the TV to get the remote after you've already plopped on the couch? Yes, I am THAT lazy.

Steph said...

While I do not know Courtney, I would have to answer as she did. If I am done watching TV, then I would probably place the remotes on the table (i.e.- I'm too lazy to walk over to the TV). However, when I am cleaning/straightening up, I always seem to put our remotes on top of the TV in the living room. So, I guess I did't really give you a good answer, other than the fact that if I were asked where the remotes were, I would reply, "Either on top of the TV or on the end table. Duh." :)

Seeing as I have a toddler as well, I have to say on top of the tv. If we put them on the end tables, Leyton immediately has ahold of them and is pushing every button possible.
