Things I love Thursday: The Red Plate

I'm still in birthday mode around here. Partly because when my head is this congested, my thoughts move slower than American Idol getting to the point. Partly because there's half of a Winnie the Pooh cake in the fridge.

Don't worry, I'm working on resolving both issues. With amoxicillin and forks.

Back to birthdays. One of my favorite favorite traditions growing up was our family's Red Plate. I prefer to use its incredibly long alternative title, the You Are Special Today plate.

My mom always did a great job making birthdays special. With everything else she did, the table was always set with the regular Hadley dishes and then that one red plate. My brothers and I ate many birthday dinners and birthday cake slices on the red plate.

I promise, food really does taste better on the red plate.

Even before I was married, I knew my first child's first birthday present would be our family's red plate.

(Sometimes I give gifts that are more for me than for her. Don't hold it against me. That's normal, right? Right?)

I hope one day Madeline will love her red plate as much as I loved mine. And that she loves it because she will have eaten all of her birthday cakes on the same plate.

Basically, I hope she's as sentimental as me. Without the constant propensity to cry while listening to the radio in the car.

(I bet you all haven't forgotten that time I sobbed over Carrie Underwood...)

Seriously? This was just 12 months ago? What happened to my baby and where did this little girl come from???

OK, I'll keep her. I can't resist the cuteness.

And yes, in typical Katie-style, I forgot to take any pictures of Madeline eating on her red plate this year. However, if you look back at the picture of Janna and Madeline, you can see the red plate on her high chair in the background. So there is photographic evidence that Madeline used it this year. It just wasn't intentional. But let's not be technical.

Hop over to The Diaper Diaries for more Things I Love Thursday.

P.S. One more thing I love: So You Think You Can Dance 2-hour premiere tonight. SO EXCITED!

I love the idea of the "red plate." I hope to make my son feel special like that for his birthdays. We are going to have a "birthday hat" made for him. Maybe we'll have a plate made too. Thanks for the great post & the idea. Your little girl is absolutely adorable!

Love the tradition! We have a "It's Your Special Day" plate that we use for all of our kids on the days we are celebrating something they've done or a milestone.

We had a blue You're the Best Plate that we always used on birthdays. And you are absolutely right, food tastes better on the special plate. I'm going to have to find something similar for our house...what a great tradition!

We have a similar tradition that is relatively new in our family. When my cousin got married, someone gave her a full set of red dishes (cup, plate, bowl, etc.) and a red diary. I got a similar set for my wedding. It's not just for birthdays either, just any special occasion. Just make sure you write all your red letter days down!
