I've always loved reading to Madeline and now she's reading to me. Cray-cray, I tell you. Next thing you know, she'll be losing a tooth or something.
One of my favorite things about homeschooling is all the time to read together. We have our favorite reading spots all over the house: the couch under the window in the morning, our two red chairs during school time, the table at lunch and Madeline's bed before naps. Sometimes we cuddle; other times she's coloring or doing her "Highlights" magazine or weaving.
Yes, weaving. She got a square, plastic loom at Christmas and now every person she knows will be receiving brightly colored potholders from now on.
Anyways, here are the chapter books we read last year when Madeline was 4 and 5.
2012 Chapter Books
Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers
Mary Poppins Comes Back by P.L. Travers
Mary Poppins Opens the Door by P.L. Travers
Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne
The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary
Ramona and Her Father by Beverly Cleary
Ramona and Her Mother by Beverly Cleary
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Madeline has fallen in love with poetry this year. She still loves a good story but she frequently picks up a poetry book and asks to read it together. I'm glad she likes all kinds of literature but I'll be honest. Sometimes I'm especially grateful for her interest in poetry because I can read several poems in way less time than one chapter and before nap time, this is priceless.
Poetry books
When We Were Very Young by A.A. Milne
Now We Are Six by A.A. Milne
The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne
Mother Goose by Gyo Fujikawa
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
A Child's Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson (Gyo Fujikawa's version, of course)
